Santa Clara County Schools
Tops in API Growth Report

SAN JOSE, CA – The three top performing schools in the state on the 2007 Academic Performance Index Growth Report are from Santa Clara County, according to data released on August 31 by the California Department of Education.

In addition, four of the top 10 schools in API are from the county, an analysis by the Santa Clara County Office of Education shows.

The top API schools are Millikin Elementary (Santa Clara Unified) with a score of 997 out of a possible 1,000; Faria Elementary (Cupertino Union), 996; and Murdock-Portal Elementary (Cupertino Union) School, 988. (Gomes Elementary in Fremont Unified also scored 988.)

"We’re always proud to see county schools performing so well," said Colleen Wilcox, Santa Clara County superintendent of schools. "At the same time, the test results reinforce the notion that much work remains to be done to get all our students performing at the level of competence where they need to be."

The API results are part of the 2007 Accountability Progress Report (APR), which includes API Growth, Adequate Yearly Progress and Program Improvement Schools results.

County results were in many cases flat this year compared to last year, mirroring a statewide trend. For example, 71 percent of county schools successfully met their AYP targets; this is a 2 percent decrease from 2006.
