The Santa Clara County History Day competition provides an exciting and high quality educational
experience for our students. The contest encourages creativity and allows students to uncover
the roots of our past by becoming detectives of historical inquiry. History Day is standards based
and goes beyond traditional curriculum because it is rich in analysis of primary and secondary sources.
The competition provides educators with empowering teachable opportunities and pupils in turn
demonstrate true characteristics of a historian.
HOW IT WORKS
Each year a primary (4th& 5th grade poster only), junior (6th-8th grade) and senior (9th-12th grade)
competition is held based on a national chosen theme. In following the theme students can choose a
category in which to enter; traditional historical papers, dramatic presentations, artistic exhibits,
multimedia documentaries or historical websites. Students work individually or in groups and research
different ideas, places, people and events in the world or the United States. They do this by visiting
museums, conducting interviews, reading historical journals and exploring historical archives.
Winners at the county level proceed to the state and national contests.
